Understanding AHAs and BHAs

AHA, which stands for Alpha Hydroxy Acid, and BHA, which stands for Beta Hydroxy Acid, are organic compounds that have become increasingly popular in recent years. These acids target different needs and skin types, supporting you in achieving a healthy and radiant complexion. These two different acids are often used together in skincare products.

Which Skin Types Are Suitable for AHA+BHA?

We mentioned that AHA and BHA are commonly used chemical exfoliants in skincare products. AHA, especially, may be suitable for dry and mature skin types because it can increase moisture levels by exfoliating dead cells from the skin's surface and reduce the appearance of fine lines. On the other hand, BHA may be more suitable for oily and acne-prone skin types as it is soluble in oil and can clean clogged pores. Choosing the right product depends on individual skin needs and other ingredients.

What is AHA?

AHAs are fruit acids derived from sugar cane and are water-soluble. AHAs are generally safe for all skin types, but if you have extremely dry and sensitive skin, you may want to use them with caution because AHAs aim to exfoliate the skin by shedding dead cells. By helping to remove dead cells from the skin, AHAs promote a brighter and more vibrant appearance. AHAs support the emergence of new cells by eliminating dead cells that cause the skin to appear rough without causing irritation. Long-term use of AHAs can increase collagen and elastin in the skin. Due to its antimicrobial properties, it can even help prevent acne formation. With these features, AHAs become a versatile treatment for many skin problems.

What is BHA?

BHAs are organic carboxylic acids containing ingredients such as salicylic acid, betaine salicylate, and salix alba. Although structurally similar to AHAs, BHAs penetrate deeper into the skin. BHAs, which are soluble in oil, are more effective in preventing acne and acne formation. They penetrate pores to remove oil and dirt. BHA, especially recommended for normal and oily skin types, can reduce redness and irritation on the skin with its anti-inflammatory properties. It can provide a deep cleansing to the skin and have positive effects on sun-induced spots. However, it is not recommended to use it instead of sunscreen.

Things to Consider When Using AHA and BHA Products Make sure the products are suitable for your skin type. Test the product on a small area of your skin before applying it to your entire face. If the product causes irritation or burning, wash your face immediately. When starting to use the product for the first time, start with a few times a week instead of using it frequently so that your skin can get used to it.
